October 2013 – Pumpkin Tasting

The pumpkin just made it’s way on tap here.  I love it.  Not too spicy, very pumpkin-y.   So I compared three commercial pumpkins:

  • Imperial Pumpking Ale 8.6%
  • Thirsty Dog Pumpkin Ale 5%
  • Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale 8%

My thoughts – Pumpking is waaaayyyy too much.  It’s like an IPA of pumpkins – surprisingly light in color too.  It’s a sipper.  Personally, way too much spice.  I am not fond of the vanilla either.  Where’s the pumpkin?  Oh…it’s hidden under all those damn spices.  Thirsty Dog’s pumpkin is just too light…way too light on everything including color…and a flavor that I’m not sure is an off flavor or it belongs their.  Weyerbacher’s pumpkin was very good.  It’s an imperial at 8% but very easy to drink as it’s perfectly balanced – you wouldn’t know you were drinking 8% beer.

I still prefer my pumpkin…it’s darker than all three of these.  I’m a subtle flavor guy and our spices, in my opinion are low enough to let the pumpkin come through – something I did not pick up in the three commercial beers.

*Though I did give Pumpkin the benefit of the doubt and went over to the Winking Lizard to get one on tap…didn’t help.  It’s a sipping beer and the last ONE you should have.  Just my tastes…subtle so I can taste, but I don’t want to sip it.  I don’t need hit over the head with flavor and spice.

Our pumpkin is on the very right for color comparison
